Happy Valentine’s Day

Today is the eleventh Valentine’s Day Len and I have shared. How well I remember the first….

It was 1997 and we had been married a little over six months. We were still at the point where we thought Hallmark days mattered with their cards and candy and flowers. We were before the time when you know that Valentine’s Day is any day when the baby doesn’t throw up on your shirt or the car isn’t making that deafening clanking sound. I was working at a bookstore in one mall and he was working at a kiosk that sold photographs and paintings at a another mall. We had scrimped and saved for dinner at Steak and Ale after work and had a lovely evening planned.

Atlanta traffic, always terrible, and rain (ohmygodmywindshieldiswethowevercanIdrive) meant that Len’s normal quick little zip around on side streets turned into a 1 1/2 hour drive as I stood waiting in the vestibule of the food court entrance worrying whether I was a widow after only six months. Very Scarlett O’Hara. When he finally arrived we were both shaken by the frustration and the worry. (Kids, this was way before everyone’s Aunt Mae had a cell phone.) We went to dinner where we paid high prices for bad food and bad service at a cramped table in a corner. There was so much pressure on this night being romantic and sexy that we could barely communicate.

Later, as we wandered around a book superstore, we relaxed and the night became more pleasant. We vowed that day that we would never ruin a perfectly good February 14th again.

This year: cards. Some years we don’t even do that.

I mentioned this at work yesterday and one my my coworkers said that when she gets married she will EXPECT a card on Valentine’s Day. My boss, happily married 12 years, laughed and called his wife. “Are we doing cards this year?” “For what?” “Good answer!” After a certain amount of time you just know that you are together and you are happy and you want the day to be a reflection of that love, not superficial candy heart love.

You make my every day Valentine’s Day. You’ve put up with not seeing me much over the last few weeks with such grace. I’m so glad that tonight we can be together and celebrate where we are and who we are when we are with each other.

Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetie.

  1. First, Grace is only a friend, nothing more.

Second, you are extremely sweet and wonderful.

Third, that long ago disaster on 285 is how I found my backroads way. It was an ad lib. It would have taken 2 1/2 hours on 285.

Fourth, my candy heart love goes right to the bone.
