Out of the Closet

A few months ago we lost a Pulitzer Prize winning author against whom I have always born a grudge. I had attempted to read Norman Mailer‘s Ancient Evenings a hundred times and had never made it more than 100 pages in. It was frustrating and I decided that he was a jerk and that was that. When Mailer died, Tim, fearless leader of the Atlanta book blog, Baby Got Books, posted a clip from YouTube of Norman Mailer doing a cameo on the show Gilmore Girls.

I never paid much attention to Gilmore Girls when it was out. I didn’t really know much about it. The clip took me by surprise. I promptly Tivo’d an episode and watched it one night when I couldn’t sleep. I was hooked. Since then I have consumed every episode shown on cable and have stopped deleting them when I finish them because I can’t go a day without my Gilmore Girls and they don’t show it on the weekends. (What is happening to the world, I ask you?)

I have had show obsessions before: Scrubs, Sex and the City, Friends. Gilmore Girls, though, may take the prize as the one that hooked me the quickest and that I caught onto the latest. The last season and the full series have been released on DVD. Every season is on my Amazon wish list except for Season One which is shipping to me today.

I can honestly say that after my family (including my cats and the pets of my loved ones) my biggest loves at the moment are tea, Gilmore Girls, and My Favorite Lip Balm. These are the things that make the world go around.

I picked up The Executioners Song for my husband for Christmas. Maybe, thanks to Baby Got Books, I’ll open my mind a bit. Are you happy now, Norman Mailer?

P.S. My husband linked to the video, too, on his blog. I’ve dragged him into the Gilmore world and although he can get through the day without seeing it he enjoys what he sees. And our Siamese, Noah, has two middle names: Norman Mailer. Noah Norman Mailer.
